Headspace is an app that helps you meditate. With the app, you can choose between guided and self-guided meditations. We went to the Headspace headquarters for a behind the scenes look at the magic that goes behind the website.

In Los Angeles, it was 102° so it was lovely to see a water fountain right at the entrance. In addition there was a mini kitchen stocked with frozen fruits, vegetables, fruits and nuts. This is available to all employees and visitors so I made a smoothie with spinach, berries, pineapples and almonds. It was lovely because I was in a rush this morning and didn’t have a chance to make one.

We were given a tour and started with polaroids of all the employees on their first day. The layout of the office is open with the CEO on the ground floor with the rest of the employees. There were no private offices but there were special areas for those that wanted a bit of privacy while they work as well as  mother’s room to nurse her baby.

After the tour we had an info session where we learned more about customer delivery and user centered design. These require research and a researcher’s toolkit include: user interviews, usability studies, surveys. focus groups, contextual inquiry and ethnographic research. Following this was a career day involving 3 employees and a recruiter. This was very informative as we learned the different paths each took to secure a position at Headspace which included internships, persistent application and networking.

It was a great experience learning about headspace as well as giving our feedback on our experience with the app. Headspace seems like a really good place to work as the employees all seemed happy. Lunch is provided everyday except Friday when it is donated to those in need. It appears to be the kind of company that is concerned with productivity as well as a good work-life balance.
